You might remember the time you had your hair cut for an important night out or how you spent hours styling your hair as part of a major event, such as your wedding.

You might not think of your hair's importance in your everyday life until you face losing it. And if you have cancer and are about to undergo chemotherapy or radiation, the chance of losing your hair is very real.

Many people who go through chemotherapy treatment lose some or all of their hair (alopecia). If you who have radiation treatment focused on their head or neck area, hair loss is also likely. Both men and women report hair loss as one of the side effects they fear most after being diagnosed with cancer.

Whether or not your hair falls out from your cancer treatment depends mostly on the type and dose of medication you receive. But whether you can maintain a healthy body image after your hair falls out depends a lot on your attitude and the support of your friends and family. Planning ahead for hair loss during and after cancer treatment is the best way to be sure you can spend most of your energy fighting your cancer and less energy worrying about your hair.

Causes of hair loss during cancer treatment

Two types of cancer treatment can cause hair loss:

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy drugs are powerful medications that attack rapidly growing cancer cells. Unfortunately these drugs also attack other rapidly growing cells in your body — including those in your hair roots.

Chemotherapy may cause hair loss all over your body — not just on your scalp. Sometimes your eyelashes, eyebrows, armpit, pubic and other body hair also falls out. Some chemotherapy drugs are more likely than others are to cause hair loss, and different doses can cause anything from a mere thinning to complete baldness. Talk to your doctor or nurse about the medication and dose you'll be taking. Your doctor or nurse can tell you what to expect.

Fortunately, most of the time hair loss from chemotherapy is temporary. You can expect to regrow a full head of hair six months to a year after you stop treatment, though your hair may temporarily be a different shade or texture.

Chemotherapy: One type of cancer treatment

Chemotherapy: Coping with side effects

Radiation
Radiation also attacks quickly growing cells, but unlike chemotherapy, it only affects the specific area where the treatment is concentrated. So if you have radiation to an area of your leg, you'll only lose hair in that area. If you have radiation to your head, you'll likely lose the hair on your head.

Your hair will grow back if the radiation you receive is at a relatively low dose. Higher doses can cause permanent hair loss. Talk to you doctor about what dose you'll be receiving so you'll know what to expect.

Radiation therapy: A common cancer treatment

Understanding cancer treatment

What actually happens

Chemotherapy
Your hair usually begins falling out 10 to 14 days after you start treatment. It could fall out very quickly in clumps or gradually. You'll likely notice accumulations of loose hair on your pillow, in your hairbrush or in your shower drain.

Your hair loss will continue throughout your treatment and up to a month afterward. Whether your hair thins or you become completely bald will depend on your treatment. You generally need to lose about 50 percent of your hair before it's noticeable to other people.

It takes about four to six weeks for your hair to recover from chemotherapy and start growing again. In general, you can expect about a quarter inch of growth each month.

When your hair starts to grow back, it's likely to be slightly different from the hair you lost. But the difference is usually temporary. Your new hair might have a different texture or color. It might not have the same curl, or it could be gray until the cells that control the pigment in your hair begin functioning again.

Radiation
Your hair usually begins growing back after your treatments end. But whether it grows back to its original thickness and fullness depends on your treatment. Different types of radiation and different doses will have different effects on your hair.

Radiation also affects your skin. The treatment area is likely to be red and may look sunburned or tanned. If your radiation treatment is to your head, it's a good idea to cover your head with a protective hat or scarf because your skin will be sensitive to cold and sunlight. Wigs and other hairpieces might irritate your scalp.

Preventing hair loss

No treatments exist that can guarantee your hair won't fall out during or after chemotherapy or radiation treatment. The best way for you to deal with impending hair loss is to plan ahead and focus on making yourself comfortable with your appearance before, during and after your treatment.

Several treatments have been investigated as possible ways to prevent hair loss, but none have been proved to be absolutely effective, including:

Scalp hypothermia (cryotherapy). During your chemotherapy, ice packs or similar devices are placed on your scalp to slow blood flow to your scalp. This way the chemotherapy drugs are less likely to have an effect on your scalp. In general, scalp hypothermia works somewhat in 50 percent to 80 percent of people going through chemotherapy who try it. However the procedure also causes a small risk of cancer recurring in your scalp, as this area doesn't receive the same dose of chemotherapy as the rest of your body. Most people who try this procedure find it uncomfortable.
Minoxidil (Rogaine). Applying minoxidil — a drug approved for pattern hair loss in men and women — to your scalp before and during chemotherapy isn't likely to prevent your hair loss, although some research shows it may speed up your hair regrowth. In one small study, women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer applied minoxidil twice daily throughout their treatment and for four months afterward. Though their hair eventually all fell out, it took longer for the women who applied minoxidil to lose all their hair than it did for the women who didn't use it, and their hair started to grow back about six weeks earlier.

Making the best of the situation

Your hair loss generally can't be prevented or controlled, but it can be managed. Take the following steps throughout your treatment to minimize the frustration and anxiety associated with hair loss:

Before treatment

Be gentle to your hair. Get in the habit of being kind to your hair. Don't bleach, color or perm your hair — this can weaken it. Air dry your hair as much as possible and avoid heating devices such as curling irons and hot rollers. Making your hair strong now might make it more likely to stay in your head a little longer during treatment.
Consider cutting your hair. Short hair tends to look fuller than long hair. So as your hair falls out, it won't be as noticeable if you have short hair. Also, if you have long hair, going short might help you make a better transition to total hair loss.
Plan ahead for a head covering. Now is the time to start thinking about wigs, scarves or other head coverings. Whether you choose to wear a head covering to conceal your hair loss is up to you. But it's easier to plan for it now rather than later.
During treatment

Baby your remaining hair. Continue your gentle hair strategies through your treatment. Try using a satin pillowcase, which is less likely to attract and catch fragile hair. Use a soft brush. Wash your hair only as often as necessary. Consider using a gentle shampoo when washing your hair. Stay away from shampoos with strong detergents and chemicals that can dry out your scalp, including salicylic acid, alcohol and strong fragrances.
Consider shaving your head. Some people report that their scalp feels itchy and irritated during their treatment and while their hair is falling out. Shaving your head can reduce the irritation and save the embarrassment of shedding. Some men shave their heads because they feel it looks better than the patchy hair loss they might be experiencing. Also, a shaved head might be easier for securing your wig or hairpiece.
Protect your scalp. If your head is going to be exposed to the sun or to cold air, protect it with sunscreen or a head covering. Your scalp can be sensitive as you go through treatment, so extreme cold or sunshine can easily irritate it even more.
After treatment

Continue gentle hair care. Your new hair growth will be especially fragile and vulnerable to the damage caused by styling products and heating devices. Hold off on coloring or bleaching your new hair for at least six months. Besides damaging new hair, processing could irritate your sensitive scalp.
Be patient. It's likely that your hair will come back slowly and that it might not look normal right away. But growth takes time, and it also takes time to repair the damage caused by your cancer treatment.

Choosing a head covering

Covering your head as your hair falls out is a purely personal decision. For many women hair is associated with femininity and health, so they choose to maintain that look by wearing a wig. Others choose hats and scarves. Some women choose not to cover their heads at all.

If you choose to wear a wig, talk to your doctor and a hospital social worker about resources in your area to help you find the best one for you. If you plan far enough in advance, you'll have time to find the perfect kind and get the perfect style. That way you can save your strength and energy during treatment for fighting your cancer.

Wigs

Wigs differ in cost, quality and by how much care they'll need based on:

Hair type. Do you want a wig with synthetic or real human hair? Both can be matched to your own hair color and styled to your individual taste. Some women prefer synthetic wigs because they're less expensive and hold their style longer. They also dry faster after washing than human hair and are easier to maintain.
Human hair wigs can be restyled using heating devices, such as curling irons. Some human hair wigs can be permed or colored. On the downside, human hair wigs require more maintenance, such as brushing and restyling.

Machine or handmade. Do you want a wig that's custom-made for your head, or will one for any head be OK? While machine-made wigs can look natural, sometimes handcrafted wigs look more like your real hair. Handmade wigs can usually be parted in different places on your head, and they can make it easier to wear hair accessories. Handmade and custom-made wigs are more expensive than machine-made wigs.
Try on several different styles and take along a friend to help you decide what looks most natural. You might also consider hairpieces, such as ponytails and bangs, which can be worn under a hat or scarf to give the illusion of longer hair.

If your wig doesn't come prestyled, you'll need to have it styled after you purchase it. Find a stylist or wig shop that can help show you how to put your wig on and take care of it. Look Good … Feel Better is a free program that provides hair and beauty makeovers and tips to women with cancer. These classes are offered throughout the United States and in several other countries. Many local classes are offered through local chapters of the American Cancer Society. Classes are also offered for teens — both boys and girls — through 2beMe.

Your insurance provider might cover the cost of your wig. Medicare doesn't. But because your wig is a medical expense, you can write it off on your taxes.

Talk with someone from your local chapter of the American Cancer Society or a similar organization. They'll often let you borrow or rent a wig to save money.

Other options
Scarves and hats make good head coverings, too. Don't forget to think about these options:

Berets
Sun hats
Turbans
Scarves
Bandannas
Or you might choose to go without a head covering. Some women choose to go without a wig or hat just when around friends and family, and others don't wear a head covering at all. It's up to you — there's no right or wrong answer. Choose what makes you feel the most comfortable.

Talk to your doctor

Your doctor can help you understand the changes you're about to go through as you start your chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Ask your doctor about community resources such as support groups and classes for people with cancer. Understanding your hair loss and approaching it with the right attitude is the best way to make sure you spend most of your energy fighting your cancer.

Cancer Treatment: Coping With Hair Loss - Cancer: health and medical information about cancer detection and treatment options

Cancer Treatment: Coping With Hair Loss
Hair loss (alopecia) is a common side effect of chemotherapy, but not all drugs cause hair loss. Your doctor can tell you if hair loss might occur with the drug or drugs you are taking. When hair loss does occur, the hair may become thinner or fall out entirely. Hair loss can occur on all parts of the body, including the head, face, arms and legs, underarms, and pubic area. The hair usually grows back after the treatments are over. Some people even start to get their hair back while they are still having treatments. Sometimes, hair may grow back a different color or texture.

Hair loss does not always happen right away. It may begin several weeks after the first treatment or after a few treatments. Many people say their head becomes sensitive before losing hair. Hair may fall out gradually or in clumps. Any hair that is still growing may become dull and dry.

How can I care for my scalp and hair during chemotherapy?

Use a mild shampoo.

Use a soft hair brush.

Use low heat when drying your hair.

Have your hair cut short. A shorter style will make your hair look thicker and fuller. It also will make hair loss easier to manage if it occurs.

Use a sun screen, sun block, hat, or scarf to protect your scalp from the sun if you lose hair on your head.

Avoid brush rollers to set your hair.

Avoid dying, perming, or relaxing your hair.
Some people who lose all or most of their hair choose to wear turbans, scarves, caps, wigs, or hair pieces. Others leave their head uncovered. Still others switch back and forth, depending on whether they are in public or at home with friends and family members. There are no "right" or "wrong" choices; do whatever feels comfortable for you.

If you choose to cover your head:

Get your wig or hairpiece before you lose a lot of hair. That way, you can match your current hair style and color. You may be able to buy a wig or hairpiece at a specialty shop just for cancer patients. Someone may even come to your home to help you. You also can buy a wig or hair piece through a catalog or by phone.

You may also consider borrowing a wig or hairpiece, rather than buying one. Check with the nurse or social work department at your hospital about resources for free wigs in your community.

Take your wig to your hairdresser or the shop where it was purchased for styling and cutting to frame your face.

Some health insurance policies cover the cost of a hairpiece needed because of cancer treatment. It is also a tax-deductible expense. Be sure to check your policy and ask your doctor for a "prescription."
Losing hair from your head, face, or body can be hard to accept. Feeling angry or depressed is common and perfectly all right. At the same time, keep in mind that it is a temporary side effect. Talking about your feelings can help. If possible, share your thoughts with someone who has had a similar experience.

For more information about cancer therapy side effects, and coping with them, please read the MedicineNet.com article, "Chemotherapy and Cancer Treatment, Coping with Side Effects."

The above information has been provided with the kind permission of the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (www.nci.nih.gov).

Is getting a hair weave healthy for my hair?

Being in the hair industry for over 10 years I have often been approached with the question whether or not getting a weave is healthy. My answer is yes if the weave is applied properly.you can either get one of two methods sewn in or bonded. Both requires your time and skilled professional imput, both can be worn for a lengthy amount of time, and both can keep your hands and constant aggravations away!!!!1

Hair who's who

Keune Keune stands for elegance, creativity and the contemporary hair look.
